Hi Everyone,
The following is the agenda for the next meeting at Irrera. Anyone coming please print a copy since only a limited number of copies will be available.
Agenda for Committee Meeting #42 - 21st June 2008
IBM's newly unveiled Roadrunner supercomputer became the first to achieve 1.6 petaflops and is officially the world's fastest supercomputer. It runs Red Hat Enterprise Linux on almost 7000 AMD Opteron dual-core CPUs and 13,000 IBM PowerXCell 8i CPUs. It's no laptop - it covers 1,100 square meters.
Anyone want to run Quake 4 on an IMAX screen?
As some of you might know, BBB (Big Buck Bunny) is the second open movie created entirely with blender. (Blender is an open source 3D design/animation/rendering program).
The main idea behind such a project is ofcourse to showcase the abilities of blender and how it can be used to create industry standard productions.
As you might notice, our Website isn't what you might call top of the charts active...Although we do have the odd news story every now and then, one will realise that not much discussion happens here.
So is it because we don't discuss anything ? On the contrary, those who are subscribed to our Mailing list will know that discussions, flamewars and miscellaneous pieces of geekdom abound there.. Which brings me on to the main point of this rather lengthy post..Our mailing list.
Although the final release date has yet to be announced, Mozilla have an interesting project afoot. They're trying to set a world record for the most times a software product is downloaded in 24 hours. How about pledging your support to download the product too? If FireFox sets a new world record it will get considerable promotion in the media... which leads to more people trying it out.
In a Slashdot article, it seems that Microsoft will upgrade Office 2007 to support ODF 1.1, but won't be supporting the OOXML standard which Microsoft itself bullied ISO into approving as an ISO standard - at least not in the near future.
Wouldn't it be ironic if the first product to support the OOXML standard is, in fact, OpenOffice.org?
As many will know by now, our server was the victim of Murphy's law a while back. We had a RAID array with one spare hard disk, and Murphy's law (MLUG variation) states that if you have one spare disk, you will lose two. Simultaneously.
Anyway, now that we have acquired two new disks thanks to P.Toledo Ltd., we're in the process of piecing things together again, but it will take some time and in probably, any old links won't work. Please download some patience in the meantime.
The online Maltese spell checker, one of the most popular resources on this website, is back up and running - see link on the left.

* Server was re-installed. Data was not recovered, however an archive from August 2007 was recovered. Archive contained mailing list subscribers and text from old website.
